Excerpt Epilogue I

The fire of a barbecue pit crackled and spat as it burn steadily, casting a warm orange light onto its surroundings. In its immediate vicinity stood a giant of a man, or what many would have thought, given his height and girth. The light however fell on the face of a young teenager, curtained by long locks of thick black hair, barely eighteen. A unique Asian heritage markedd this boy, as he was a mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay, and his features benefited from it, having the big eyes of the second and the fair skin of the first. The Malay heritage showed in the developed muscles on his body, a mark of the race who buffed up naturally. His bicep flexed as he deftly maneuvered the dogs, preventing any from getting burnt. Broad shoulders and the way he carried himself suggested an athlete, though his friends would agree that it is only grudgingly so. Shaun took in a quick breath, sniffling slightly, his nose had never agreed to heat, having a form of sinusitis. He enjoyed the night air, and staying out with his chums. Looking over his shoulder, he glanced two figures, as if to make sure they were safe.

Directly behind the sniffling giant, a boy of indian heritage sat lounging on the benches that littered the area. He was a gangly one, with skin a rich brown colour that was better than any tan, fondly referred to as 'shit coloured', an oft repeated joke by his friends, though with no malicious intent behind it. His big eyes were deep orbs, hinting at a deeper intelligence and wisdom and a good hint of sensibility. Vi shifted slightly in his seat, the lack of meat on his buttocks (and any part of him for that matter) made the rough hard surface of the bench a bit uncomfortable. 'Eat more!' was another oft repeated phrase, mostly by Shaun though. He chewed on a chicken thigh he had barbequed earlier while chatting to the boy next to him.

Kev sat beside Vi, working himself over on a large hot dog he had luckily snatched before Shaun got his hands on it. The boy had spiky locks of meticulously styled hair, and the soft Chinese features of his face were almost feminine. This meant he was quite the stunner to the opposite sex but a timid and slightly off key personality kept them away. In height he was almost as tall as Vi though nowhere near the 6'4 of Shaun. He was even skinnier than the Indian youth though, making him look even shorter than he actually is. Laughing aloud at a joke Vi had made, he dropped the dog. Immediately, he picked it up again and stuffed it in his mouth before any of the two could even move to stop him.

They were a bunch of rowdy teenagers with the other half of their group partying up in the hotel. Looking at the view around him, Shaun smiled wide as he took in the greenery, nothing but forests and mountains and that beautiful hotel behind him. Jhun's idea was great, a retreat up in this newly opened eco resort.

If only they knew, that this is the beginning of a harsh and painful destiny.
